Gelderlanders Jop Kraaijkamp and Sebastian Mulder win Golden Deer at Go Short Arnhem

In a packed hall at Focus Filmtheater on Sunday night 6 October, the coveted Golden Deer were awarded to the makers of best short films from Gelderland. Jop Kraaijkamp and Sebastian Mulder received the award for their films Schaap Lekker (fiction) and And a Happy New Year (non-fiction) respectively. A Special Mention went to Glitch Glitch by Merel van Slobbe and one to Let's Play by Marzieh Rasekh.

Short film festival Go Short Arnhem (4-6 October) is all about regional film talent. To encourage (beginning) makers, Go Short organises the annual Gelders Kort Competition. The nominated films in this competition were shown on the big screen during the three-day festival. The winners were presented today, on the last day of the festival. The competition's professional jury consisted of Nazmiye Oral (actress and writer), Guido Coppis (filmmaker) and Bea de Visser (filmmaker and artist).

Jop Kraaijkamp - Schaap Lekker (Golden Deer for best fiction)

In this film, a little sheep, working as a quality controller in a starch factory, struggles with the pressures of his job. At night, his stress turns into a bizarre musical nightmare in which a giant cauliflower sings about pollution and destruction. This unique animation combines humour with underlying themes about work pressure and responsibility.

"Short films are special because it is pre-eminently the genre to experiment. The name says it all; it has to be SHORT, you have to be very clear as a maker what you want to tell in essence, both in image and sound. And if that succeeds then you take in something, and understand why exactly this had to be a short. We opted for a film that understands all this well, but also dares to go off the rails and where the pleasure of making it shines through. We like the way the maker has definitely mixed different techniques. We see that this maker has a strong voice in development and we would like to encourage that," the jury said.

Sebastian Mulder, And a Happy New Year (Gouden Hert voor beste non-fictie)

De winnaar in non-fictie is And a Happy New Year van Sebastiaan Mulder.”

Special Mentions
Let’s Play and Glitch Glitch

Just short of prizes but definitely worth mentioning, the jury thought Let's Play by Marzieh Rasekh and Glitch Glitch by Merel van Slobbe.

"They are films that are daring and bold and well made in their own right. We would like to encourage these makers to continue that. We would also with that encourage all other makers not to shy away from brutality and rawness, because that way you can find your own voice even if it is not everyone's taste."
