TWO DUTCH WINNERS IN THE EUROPEAN COMPETITION

Two Dutch winners in the European competition Woensdag 20 april 2016
This year, for the first time, two Dutch films won prizes in the European competition. Noël Loozen won the best fiction film award and The Sniper of Kobanî, directed by Reber Dosky, won the award for best documentary.

Noël Loozen first studied photography at the Rietveld Academy. He then made two movies upon graduation. He became fascinated by film. After this Loozen chose to follow a Master's degree at the Dutch Film Academy, where he learned to deal with the various facets of film. Boundaries and obstacles are recurring elements in his work. This can be seen in his short movie Spoetnik, in which a boy on a scooter crashes into a no man's land, just across the border of the Netherlands and Wallonia.

Reber Dosky moved from Kurdistan to the Netherlands fourteen years ago. At the Film Academy in Amsterdam he studied Documentary Direction. In 2013 he graduated with his documentary The Call, in which he showed the effects of depopulation politics for a Kurdish father and his son. Now he has, in his own words, pledged his heart to Kobani. For The Sniper of Kobani he used a drone camera to film the devastated city from above. The material did not survive the journey home, and so he had to return to the city to do it all over again. Dosky risked his life twice to capture a unique story.
